Wild Elephants On Rampage In Mysore City, Killed One

MYSORE: Two wild elephants strayed into Mysore city from a nearby forest and played havoc all around destroying whatever they found in front of them. People ran for their life, news report said

The two young elephants came from the forest about 35km (22 miles) from the city in early hours of Wednesday. They wandered on the streets. One of the wild elephants crashed into a
women’s college compound. The other elephant stormed a residential area and trampled a man Prasad who had come out of his house to see the uproar on the streets. He was taken to hospital but he died.

The three hour rampage came to end after the Forest Guards from the Mysore zoo rushed and shot tranquilizer to capture the elephants.

Forest officials blamed that people are encroaching the jungles originally inhabited by elephants. The official said “Unregulated expansion of farm lands and increasing movement of people and vehicles through the elephant corridor are making the wild jumbos enter into villages and towns in search of food and shelter,"

Chief Minister of Karnataka, B.S. Yeddyurappa has announced an amount of Rs.500, 000 to the family of Prasad as compensation, the news report said.
