Gurdaspur: May 30, 2011, Gopal Dass, 52, set free by Pakistan on 7th April after 27 years on, started a new chapter of his life when he married 38 year old Pinky from Shimla in a Panchula Gurudwara on Sunday, a news report said.
Gopal Dass was crossed into Pakistani territory by mistake in 1984. He was caught by Pakistani security men and was later convicted on charge of spying and put in jail. Gopal had always claimed that he was innocent and trapped but could not prove. No one from India helped him during the long 27 years of his detention in jail.
He was released by Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari on an appeal made by the Indian Chief justice. Ansar Burni, a Pakistani human right activist also played an active role in Gopal’s release from jail.
Gopal dass said after the marriage “"When I was behind bars in Pakistan, I had never thought that I would be ever getting out, let alone get married. But now, it is a reality".
His wife Pinky said that she was happy and going to pass a simple life with a good human being.
