Chinese Military 20 Years Behind US: Says Liang Guanglie
SINGAPORE - June 6, 2011
Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said on Sunday that China's military development was still 20 years behind the United States', and it was not a threat to regional peace, a news report said.
Shangri-La Dialogue is also called the Asia Security Summit, a non-official conference to provide a platform for officials and experts on defense to interact and exchange views on security issues concerning Asia.
The Chinese defense minister, Liang Guanglie was a key participant from the mainland China in the ‘Shangri-La Dialogue’ hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Singapore.
Liang said “China's military development was still 20 years behind the United States’---.
"A large portion of our military is still motorized, and only a small part is mechanized."
Her said “We have a generational gap with other developed militaries,"----"Although we have made some breakthroughs and progress in military science and technology,"
Speaking on the last day of the forum Liang Guanglie said China would never seek hegemony or military expansion. "This is a solemn pledge made by the Chinese government to the international community,"
The Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie also met Defense Secretary Robert Gates out side the summit schedule.
